School notices, community center announcements, tender documents and government grant applications in Korea are still very often sent as HWP (Hangul) files. The trouble is that Hancom Office is paid software, and it is usually missing on company PCs, personal laptops, MacBooks and phones. This guide compares three ways to open HWP files with no installation, or with only a free tool.
Method 1. Use a browser-based HWP viewer
The fastest option is to open the file directly in a web browser. A viewer that interprets the file inside your browser instead of uploading it, such as the HWP Viewer on this site, needs no installation and no account.
How to use it
- Open the HWP viewer page in a modern browser such as Chrome, Edge, Whale or Safari.
- Drag the HWP file into the area in the middle of the screen.
- Read the document, then print it or copy its text if you need to.
Pros and limits
- Pros: it works on any operating system, even on a company PC where you cannot install software. If the viewer does not upload files, you can open confidential documents with reasonable peace of mind.
- Limits: documents with complex tables, shapes and text boxes may look slightly different from the original. In that case, check the content first with the text extraction tab.
Method 2. Hancom's official free viewer
Hancom distributes a free viewer that can only display and print documents on its official website. It needs to be installed, but it shows the original layout most accurately.
- It is the right choice for contracts, submission forms and exam papers where the exact layout matters.
- It cannot edit documents, so you need Hancom Office or a web editor to change the content.
- Avoid installers labeled "free HWP viewer" from unofficial sites, as they may contain malware.
Method 3. Open it on your phone with a browser or an app
If an HWP file arrives by KakaoTalk or email while you are away from your computer, you need to read it on your phone.

In Chrome on Android or Safari on iPhone, open the web viewer and tap Choose files to pick the HWP file from the Files app or the Downloads folder. On a small screen, the text extraction tab is often much easier to read than the page layout.
Mobile viewer apps
If you receive HWP files often, installing Hancom's official mobile viewer or an office app such as Polaris Office is another option. Some apps show ads or require you to sign in for certain features.
